Seeing Is Not Believing

Astrology is a wonderful, insightful and enlightening subject. Anyone who undertakes to study it has to do so with tremendous commitment and dedication. Once qualified, professional astrologers spread the word about how amazing astrology is by writing about it and demonstrating it's accuracy through celebrity forecasts, etc. Exactly the reason I created this blog - to showcase my work as an astrologer and to tell everyone that astrology is not just about Sun signs, and not just superstition. I want to encourage students who want to learn more and I'm happy to answer their questions.

However, some professional astrologers are so keen to encourage people who know nothing about astrology to actually think that they can 'do astrology' without putting in the years of hard work, that they end up sending out the wrong information and do major damage to our reputation. This was drawn to my attention a few days ago when a professional astrologer - I won't reveal his name - posted an 'at-a-glance' table on his blog claiming that, if you use it, you will be able to find your Rising Sign. This is not how astrology works! Why send out inaccurate information?

Apparently this 'do-it-yourself Rising Sign calculator' has gone viral. Bad news. Now everyone who is superficially interested in horoscopes thinks they have found out how to make their personal analysis more real and exciting. Instead, by using this information, they have been sent completely down the wrong path. As for people who already think astrology is a load of crap, they are having the time of their lives, claiming that this proves their theory.

Astrologers DO NOT use tables to obtain instant information about a person's rising sign by looking at a table of Sun signs and time periods. It can ONLY be calculated using the date, time, and place of birth. If you see this Rising Sign table - don't believe it.

  2. This table is meant to serve as a general guide to the rising sign. It has to be calculated for birth time and place of birth for real accuracy.

    1. Why are you telling me this? Did you not read my article?

The point is: It's not a "general guide" to anything - it does not work. It's useless. My rising sign is Capricorn. Using this table it comes out as Aries. Totally inaccurate. My friend's rising sign is Scorpio - using this it's Sagittarius.

Most people don't know their rising sign. But for those who are interested in finding out, this table will send them off in the wrong direction.

No information is better than wrong information. The astrologer who put this out should be ashamed.

    2. You're right Sue. People will believe this and think they know their rising sign. Very irresponsible for a pro astrologer to promote this garbage.

  3. 'Instant' DIY methods like this do nothing to advance the attitude towards astrology in the public domain. All it does is fire up the sceptics.

  4. I've seen this rising sign table several times recently and every time some professional astrologer's name is added to it. As a professional astrologer myself, I agree with you Sue, THIS DOES NOT WORK.

So, the real question is: Why would any professional astrologer allow themselves to be associated with this garbage which puts astrology in a bad light and goes a long way towards ruining it's reputation?

I'm not into conspiracy theories but there is something weird going on here.

    1. I have to agree it's suspicious.

I've spent years trying to promote astrology as a worthwhile, genuine subject, hence the blog subtitle 'Real Astrology For The 21st Century'. This rising sign table gives the impression that anyone can do astrology instantly which, as you know, is not the case at all.

So why would any professional want to promote this crap? One answer - MONEY. What some people will do for money never ceases to amaze me. Most of the astrologers involved in this seem to write for magazines. That means they are already promoting astrology but in a user-friendly popular way. Not only does it make astrology more popular, it makes the astrologer more popular too. And the more popular these astrologers become, the more money they can make.

They have exploited astrology and are undermining the reputations of other professional astrologers. I'm disgusted.

    1. Hi, no problem :-)

I found it really easy to set up a blog. This one was done using Google Blogger. This is the only blog platform I can personally recommend, as it's the only one I've tried. Google Blogs are completely free and there are lots of templates to choose from. As a digital artist, I now use my own designs.

      Here's a link:

      https://www.blogger.com

The best advice I can give you is to search online - just type "Free blogs" and you should find a lot of useful information.

      I hope this helps.
